UN Charter and Human Rights

Introduction

Human rights are rights inherent to all human beings, whatever their nationality, place of residence, sex, national or ethnic origin, color, religion, language, or any other status. We are all equally entitled to our human rights without discrimination. These rights are all interrelated, interdependent and indivisible. Universal human rights are often expressed and guaranteed by law, in the forms of treaties, customary international law, general principles and other sources of international law

*In 1945, after the event of World War II ,51 countries met at a conference held in San Francisco to sign a document which was the United Nations Charter founding the United Nations Organization (UNO).

*The Charter of the United Nations was signed on 26 June 1945 in San Francisco, at the conclusion of the United Nations Conference on International Organization, and came into force on 24 October 1945.

*The United Nations (UN) is an international organization with the primary goal of maintaining international peace and security.

*The UN has 193 member states and its headquarters are in New York City.

*UNO has six organs:

1-The General Assembly,

2-The Security Council,

3-The Economic and Social Council,

4-The Trusteeship Council,

5-The International Court of Justice,

6-The Secretariat

4-Maintaining International Peace and Security

Important provision relating to human rights are Article 1, 13(1)(B), 55(C), 62(2), 68, and 76(C).

1-Article 1(3) : To achieve international co-operation in solving international problems of an economic, social, cultural, or humanitarian character, and in promoting and encouraging respect for human rights and for fundamental freedoms for all without distinction as to race, sex, language, or religion;

2-Article 13(1)(b): The General Assembly shall initiate studies and make recommendations for the purpose of promoting international co-operation in the economic, social, cultural, educational, and health fields, and assisting in the realization of human rights and fundamental freedoms for all without distinction as to race, sex, language, or religion.

3-Article 55(c) : The United Nations shall promote universal respect for, and observance of, human rights and fundamental freedoms for all without distinction as to race, sex, language, or religion.

4-Article 62(2): It may make recommendations for the purpose of promoting respect for, and observance of, human rights and fundamental freedoms for all

5-Article 68 : The Economic and Social Council shall set up commissions in economic and social fields and for the promotion of human rights, and such other commissions as may be required for the performance of its functions.

6-Article 76(c): The Purposes of the United Nations shall be :to encourage respect for human rights and for fundamental freedoms for all without distinction as to race, sex, language, or religion, and to encourage recognition of the interdependence of the peoples of the world.
